The West Worthing Conservatives on Worthing Borough Council have added two new members to its group in a stunning set of victories that saw two seats won from Labour in just three weeks. Councillor Thomas Taylor won the Marine Ward by-election by 100 votes seeing Labour pushed to second place in one of their perceived safest wards. The outgoing Councillor and now MP, Labour’s Beccy Cooper first took this seat in 2017, which subsequently was the first seat to be taken from the Conservatives in Worthing. Poetically, it is the first seat that the Conservatives have taken back from Labour since then. Buoyed by this success and employing new campaigning methods, the Conservatives then rapidly entered election mode in the Heene ward, where Labour were defending a massive majority of 450.
Another victory.
So soon after the first victory, the second one was announced. Conservative members and supporters propelled the Party to victory in Heene, achieving a 42 vote majority where it had previously been thought impossible. Councillor Luke Houghton and the campaign machine left Labour licking their wounds once more. These incredible victories were only achieved by the hard work and dedication of the members and supporters in the Heene and Marine wards.
“We are back”
The message sent across Worthing is clear, as Deputy Chairman of the West Worthing Conservative Association, Mark Holdsworth states:
“We are back. So soon after a historic defeat in Worthing, we will be taking the fight to Labour at every level of Government. Roll on the County Council elections next year”.
